ACK Smart Advisory Board
ACK Smart is grateful to our board; Gary Vogel of Eagle Bulk Shipping, Samuel A. Flax of Georgetown Law, and William M. Moore of Hudson Energy Development. These three men combined have over 100 years of professional experience, nearly ten degrees from some of the world's most renowned institutions, and a love for Nantucket that was essential in their selection.
-
Gary Vogel is the former Chief Executive Officer and Director of Eagle Bulk Shipping, Inc. (Nasdaq: EGLE), where he led the company from 2015 until its successful merger with Star Bulk Carriers in 2024. He currently serves as a Director of SFL Corp. Ltd. (NYSE: SFL), one of the world's leading maritime asset-owning companies and Pangaea Logistics Solutions Ltd. (Nasdaq: PANL), a leading maritime logistics and transportation company operating a fleet of approximately 50-60 dry bulk vessels.
Prior to Eagle Bulk, Gary served as Chief Executive Officer of Clipper Group Ltd. and Clipper Bulk, having joined the company in 2000. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and earned a U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Tonnage Third Officer's License. Following graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
A lifelong sailor, Gary has a deep appreciation for Nantucket and the sea. His favorite island moments include sailing into Nantucket Harbor, rounding Brant Point at the start of each season, and watching the sunrise over the Atlantic from Sconset.
-
Samuel A. Flax brings extensive legal, corporate, and academic experience to the ACK Smart Advisory Board. He is currently a Professor of the Practice at Georgetown University Law Center, following a distinguished 35-year career as a practicing attorney and corporate executive.
Sam previously served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Compliance Officer of American Capital, Ltd., a publicly traded private equity and asset management firm that managed more than $100 billion in assets. Throughout his career, he has advised organizations on complex legal, governance, compliance, and business matters.
Sam and his wife, Meg, have been coming to Nantucket since the early 1990s, when their three children were young. Although a seasonal resident, he is deeply committed to the island community. In addition to serving on the ACK Smart Advisory Board, Sam is a member of the Nantucket Atheneum Board of Trustees, where he serves as the Chair.
-
William M. Moore brings more than four decades of leadership and innovation in the renewable energy industry to the ACK Smart Advisory Board, having pioneered many of the first utility scale wind and solar energy projects in the Eastern US. Since beginning his energy career in 1979, Bill has served as a utility regulatory analyst, project finance banker, and co-founder of one of the first independent wind development companies. His career includes leading the development of the largest wind farm in Eastern North America, serving as CEO of Deepwater Wind during the development of America's first offshore wind project, and overseeing the development of the first four utility-scale solar projects in South Carolina.
Bill's connection to Nantucket spans generations. His father's family first visited the island in the 1920s, and Bill later moved to Nantucket with his mother in the 1970s, where he developed an early interest in construction and residential solar energy. Today, he enjoys spending time on the island with his family, sailing in Polpis Harbor, and giving back to the community through his service with the Nantucket Preservation Trust.
